Eating Disorders

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.”- Abraham Maslow

I Understand How Hard This Can Be

What many people don’t understand, is that your Eating Disorder can start to feel like a friend that you can always turn to. One of the scariest things for a client to hear is that they need to “get rid” of their Eating Disorder. When loved ones tell you to stop acting on symptoms, it can feel threatening as your Eating Disorder has “been there for you” for months, years or even decades.

No one has ever woken up one morning and decided that they are going to develop an Eating Disorder. Many times, the client isn’t sure exactly why they constantly feel the need to be perfect, or dislike the feeling of losing control. There is always an underlying issue that fuels the Eating Disorder, making it difficult to have energy for anything other than your symptoms.

My Approach

My approach is to work with you in a way that feels safe and comfortable. While the symptoms of an Eating Disorder are important to discuss, my goal is to treat the underlying issues. I am here to help you understand what pain the Eating Disorder is protecting you from feeling. By working together, we can slowly start to understand why this eating disorder “part” of you has become so intense and how to show yourself the compassion that this “part” often does not allow you to feel.

I feel it is extremely important for your recovery that I collaborate with the rest of your treatment team, ie. a nutritionist and possibly a psychiatrist. If you do not have a treatment team, we can discuss the benefits of having one and potential referrals.

What to Expect if you choose me as your therapist:

  • I will always engage you with the utmost compassion and respect. I will never judge you or jump to conclusions.
  • Creating a safe space is my number one priority
  • We will always go at your preferred pace.
  • I am a naturally calm, caring and supportive person, and all of these qualities and characteristics will be readily apparent when we work together.

For Family Members

When an individual is afflicted with an eating disorder, his or her family members also experience a different — but very real — type of suffering. I can help you understand how you can be part of the solution: for your loved one who needs care, and indeed, for yourself as well.

Recovery is Possible
